Shoulder Pain

Shoulder pain is one of the most common musculoskeletal complaints. It can occur suddenly or develop over a longer period of time. Many people experience pain when raising their arm, carrying loads, or performing everyday movements. Nighttime discomfort and limited range of motion are also common.

Since the shoulder is involved in nearly every arm movement, pain often has a direct impact on daily life, work, and leisure activities. This makes it all the more important to have symptoms evaluated early on and to treat their underlying cause in a targeted manner.

Why the Shoulder Is So Vulnerable

The shoulder has the greatest range of motion of any joint in the human body. This high degree of mobility allows for a wide variety of movements, but at the same time makes the joint more susceptible to overuse, improper loading, and wear and tear.

Among the most common causes of shoulder pain are rotator cuff irritation, impingement syndrome, calcium deposits, bursitis, and osteoarthritic changes. Since many of these conditions cause similar symptoms, an accurate diagnosis is crucial for initiating the appropriate treatment.

Frequently Asked Questions

What causes shoulder pain?

Shoulder pain can have many causes. It is often caused by overexertion, improper strain, wear and tear, or inflammation of tendons and bursae. Calcium deposits or injuries can also trigger symptoms.

Not every shoulder problem requires immediate treatment. However, if the pain persists for several days or weeks, if there is a loss of range of motion, or if the symptoms worsen, you should see a doctor to determine the cause.

Many shoulder conditions cause discomfort, especially at rest. Inflammation, irritation of the rotator cuff, or calcific tendinitis can lead to pain, particularly at night or when lying on the affected side.

Impingement syndrome occurs when tendons or bursa in the shoulder joint become pinched. Those affected often experience pain when raising their arm or performing overhead movements. The symptoms often develop gradually.

In calcific tendinitis, calcium crystals build up in the tendons of the shoulder. This can lead to severe pain and limited range of motion. Symptoms often appear suddenly and can significantly interfere with daily life.

Treatment depends on the cause of the symptoms. Conservative measures such as acupuncture, shock wave therapy, local injections, or other individually tailored treatment methods are often used.
