Foot and Knee Pain

Our knees and feet carry us through our daily lives. With every step, our joints, tendons, ligaments, and muscles are subjected to significant stress. When pain sets in, even short distances can quickly become a challenge. Many people initially notice the symptoms only during exercise or after prolonged physical activity. Over time, however, they can also occur while walking, standing, or climbing stairs.

Since the knees and feet are closely connected, the cause of the symptoms isn’t always where the pain is actually felt. This makes a thorough examination of the entire range of motion all the more important.

The Foundation of the Musculoskeletal System

Our feet form the foundation for posture, balance, and movement. Even minor misalignments or changes can affect the knees, hips, and spine. At the same time, the knee joints are among the most heavily stressed joints in the body and must absorb significant forces on a daily basis.

The most common causes of discomfort include signs of wear and tear, misalignments, overuse, tendon irritation, ligament injuries, and muscular imbalances. If these issues go unrecognized over an extended period, pain and restricted movement can progressively worsen.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why do knee and foot pain often occur together?

The knees and feet are part of a single kinetic chain. Changes or misalignments in the foot can affect the stress on the knee joint, and vice versa.

The most common causes include osteoarthritis, meniscus injuries, overuse, ligament injuries, tendon irritation, and improper weight-bearing during daily activities or sports.

Foot pain can be caused by misalignments, overuse, inflammation, osteoarthritis, or changes in tendons and ligaments. Wearing unsuitable footwear can also contribute to the discomfort.

A heel spur is a bony protrusion on the heel bone. It can cause pain on the sole of the foot, especially when stepping down or after prolonged periods of rest.

If pain occurs regularly, swelling persists, physical activity is limited, or symptoms continue for an extended period, a consultation with a specialist is recommended.

Depending on the cause, sensorimotor insoles can help improve biomechanical conditions and have a positive effect on symptoms.
